The Story Behind the Afrikaner Brand

A few years ago, a close friend of mine had a fire lit in him after hearing a well-known actress say:
“Afrikaans is a dying language — only 44 people still speak it.”

That statement hit hard. It wasn’t just false — it was a wake-up call. A reminder that if we do nothing, we could actually lose our language and culture.

So, he started an Afrikaner Vellie business, not just as a brand, but as a bold response. A symbol that we are still here — proud, present, and persevering.

His career as an engineer taught him about hard work, discipline, and pride in what you create — values deeply rooted in our Afrikaner DNA.

The brand is represented by the Afrikaner Bull — a symbol of strength, determination, and the unwavering spirit of our people. No matter the challenge, we stand tall.

Afrikaner Vellies is for those who know where they come from, who know who they are, and who live their culture with pride.

When he invited me to be part of this journey — to help make and sell these beloved trappers — I didn’t hesitate. I saw more than just vellies and leather goods.
I saw a way to honour who we are, where we come from, and what we’re still building.

Only true Suide Afrikaners will understand why.

This isn’t just about shoes. It’s about walking proudly in the footsteps of our forefathers.
It’s about preserving what runs deeper than fashion — our culture, our language, and our history.

And that’s how Afrikaner Vellies was born — with toughness, pride, a rugged soul, and a rich story that’s just getting started…

Roy – My Story

In the winter of 1978, my dear Aunty Joyce gave me a pair of Vellies for my 18th birthday. I was probably one of the first — and few — in Bloemies to own a pair of these Lekker shoes.

I absolutely loved them. Wore them everywhere and with everything — shorts, 45cm bell-bottoms, stovepipe jeans, and even as slippers on those chilly frosty nights.

My Vellies walked the mountains, trekked the bushveld, crossed rivers, and even made it to church. They went wherever I did.

They were probably my first pair of flat shoes (because let’s be honest, 4-inch heels were cool back then!) — but definitely not my last pair of vellies.

And when people told me they were finished and needed to be donated — that was a red line.
Family, friends, enemies, even good mates didn’t understand. Those shoes were part of my DNA.

Over the years I patched, glued, and stitched them. I just couldn’t part with them.
To this day, they still have a special spot in my cupboard.

And that’s where they’ll stay.

Forever.

The Original Veldskoen — A Legacy Worn with Pride

When you lace up a pair of Afrikaner Vellies, you’re not just putting on a shoe — you’re walking in the footsteps of generations. Each step tells a story of tradition, resilience, and the untamed spirit of Africa.

The veldskoen, or vellie, is more than a South African staple — it’s a piece of living heritage with roots that stretch back over a thousand years. While the name veldskoen — meaning field shoe in Afrikaans — was first recorded by Dutch settlers in the 1600s, the shoe itself predates them by centuries.

The earliest known version of the vellie is believed to have been crafted by the Khoisan people, Southern Africa’s first inhabitants. Using a single piece of animal hide, they shaped a shoe that was both functional and long-lasting — ideal for traversing rough terrain, enduring harsh climates, and supporting their nomadic way of life. These early shoes required no nails or complex construction — just skilled hands, natural materials, and an understanding of the land.

When the Dutch settlers arrived, they encountered this ingenious design and quickly adopted and adapted it to suit their own lifestyles. Thus, the veldskoen became the footwear of farmers, frontiersmen, and explorers — a trusted companion across the plains, mountains, and dusty roads of Southern Africa. With time, it was embraced by other communities throughout the region, from Namibia to Zimbabwe, becoming a symbol of rugged practicality and quiet endurance.

Over the centuries, the vellie has remained largely unchanged — and for good reason. Its simplicity is its genius. Tough yet comfortable. Humble yet iconic. A true reflection of the African spirit.

Versatile by nature, the vellie is a shoe for everyone. Whether you’re a woman chasing dreams, a man rooted in tradition, or a child discovering the world — vellies offer the perfect blend of durability, style, and all-day comfort. From school yards to bushveld trails, weddings to weekend markets, there’s a vellie for every season and every story.

At Afrikaner Vellies, we’re proud to carry that tradition forward. Every pair we make is handcrafted the old-fashioned way — hand-cut, sewn, and shaped by skilled South African artisans. We use only premium leathers, sourced locally, and every detail, from the stitching to the sole, speaks of quality, care, and heritage.

Whether you wear them on the farm, in the city, or on your next wild adventure, our vellies are built for the journey — for those who live with heart, move with purpose, and carry their roots with pride.

Wearing a vellie is not just about style. It’s about story. It’s about standing firm in where you come from, and boldly walking toward where you’re going.
